When some people think of designing a custom engagement ring, they imagine that it will be a lot of work and cost a lot of money. Well we want to put an end to this and show you how simple the process is and how flexible it can be for your budget. So continue reading and learn what you can expect when designing a custom engagement ring: Cost: Many people think that designing a custom engagement ring is an expensive process, but this isn't always the case. In fact, some rings can be less expensive than a comparable ring from a well known designer! We find that custom engagement rings fall into one of two categories: 1) a simple and common ring design with a unique features added, or 2) a totally unique ring in which every aspect was custom designed. We place rings into one of these two categories, because it gives you a good understanding of how much labor will go into the piece and therefor how expensive the ring will be. If you think about it, a fully custom designed ring is a piece of art that requires a lot of time to design and mount the diamonds or gemstones. The large amount of work that has to be done to create this truly unique piece can make the ring expensive. On the other hand, adding a unique feature or a small twist to an existing ring design will require much less work and therefore will be more affordable. With that being said, we believe that price should never prevent someone from getting the ring they want. If you let the jeweler know the budget you have set aside for your ring, they will work with you to create a design at a price you can afford. Even if you're just curious about designing a custom engagement ring, you can always meet with a jeweler's design team to see what options you have. Time Frame: The length of the design process varies for each piece, but the average ring takes between 3-6 weeks to create from start to finish. You can expect to hear from the designer during the process to give you updates on how the design is going and when they expect the ring to be completed. Process: You can find an in depth description of the design process here, but here is a brief summary: Gather a few pictures of any designs you want to incorporate into a ring, and bring it into a local jeweler. Once there, a ring designer will work with you to figure out what types of metal and stones you would like to use and get a rough idea of how your ring will look like. After the design team has visualized the ring, they will draw a mock up to show you the design plan. At this point, you will receive a price estimate based on the amount and type of metal, the stones, and the time that will go into creating the ring. This is when you can decide if you want to proceed with designing a custom ring or not, keeping in mind that there is a deposit to start the design process at most places (for example, we charge $250 for the deposit). Once the ring is designed, the store will often send you an image of what the CAD design looks like. You will have the opportunity to ask for any alterations to the design you may want, and once the design is finalized, it will be sent out for production. Once the setting is finished, the jeweler will mount the diamonds and/or gemstones and put on the finishing touches. And that's how simple it is to create your custom engagement ring!
