Who would have thought the gemstone Garnet and the birthstone for January was actually named after the fruit, Pomegranate. The word “garnet” comes from the 14th century Middle English word granatum, which means “dark red,” and is derived from Latin granatum, which means “seed” as the gemstone also bears resemblance to the red seeds of the pomegranate. When you think of what a pomegranate looks like, it makes sense as both the fruit and the stone are infamous for their deep, saturated red-purple hues. Many gemstones come in other colors and garnets are no exception as they can also be found in green, yellow and purple.

The history of Garnets goes back over 5,000 years to its use in talismans and weapons.
